Spring Break Trip - Day 3
On day three, after breakfast at the hotel, we headed back to Arches National Park. Today we decided to hike the Devils Garden Trail. This day was nice and warm. Some of us started out wearing jackets, but we soon took them off. It was perfect weather. Not too hot, and not too cold. However, we all got a little sunburned.

Dave posing in front of Landscape Arch. The longest arch in the park. Most of the arches you can hike all around, but this one is fenced off because it has started to collapse.
A lot of the "trails" on this hike were actually rock. You had to follow the trail markers.
Jared on the way up this rock hill. You can see one of the trail markers just behind him to let him know he is going in the right direction. It was a good teaching moment for our kids about how to follow a marked trail.

Michelle rode on Dave's shoulders quite a bit on this trail. It wasn't a trail for sissys. However, there were three elderly people hiking it with their walking sticks. I was impressed.
We stopped for a break and ate apples, oranges, and granola bars.
After our break, we walked across a rock fin which is a slab of rock with a drop off on both sides. I'm not fond of heights, but this did not bother me.
I can't remember what Kaitlin was pointing at, but it's a cute picture anyway.

We arrived at Double O Arch. The older kids and Dave went through the arch to the other side. It was pretty hard for Michelle, so she and I just waited for the others and took a little break.
These two pictures were taken on the other side of Double O Arch. The kids had to climb pretty high to get there. The camera just has a nice zoom to make it look close. This is the throne Luke found.

To get to Double O Arch, we had to hike down as far as Luke and Heather are.
There was a lot of sand in this part of the park. It reminded me of the Fayette Spring by where I grew up.

The kids were a little ahead of Dave and I on the way back. They stopped at this arch to sit down and wait. It made Dave and I nervous when we saw them sitting like this, because it looked like it dropped off pretty far on the other side. However, it was just about a 3 foot drop.
So, then, we had them pose to look like they were falling or hanging on for dear life.

Dave and I had been carrying all of the cameras and backpack on the way up, so on the way down, we had the kids help. Heather is carrying the video camera.
Towards the end of the trail we saw this cool rock with stripes on it. After hiking, we went back to Moab and ate lunch at a place called Zax. Then we went shopping for souvenirs.
Kaitlin had sunglasses on most of the time. Then she got sunburned and ended up with a racoon face.
All of the kids chose a souvenir. Heather wanted this snowglobe.
Jared, Luke, and Michelle chose a t-shirt.
Kaitlin got a hoodie. We all had a great time. Arches is a beautiful place, and we had a lot of fun together. When we got back, the next four days were rainy and cold all over the state. We definately chose the best days of spring break to take our trip.
